- Tell us a little bit about you and your business
Total Construction is a privately owned national construction company that was started in 1995. In 2013, the founding shareholders decided it was time to restructure the business for its next stage and the opportunity became available for me to become CEO. Along with developing a sustainable strategy for the business, the challenge was to harness the strength of the senior management team that had adopted a silo approach to working together. - Why did you approach Human Tribe initially?
Over the course of 12 months I interviewed a number of consulting agencies to assist in transforming the management team but it was not until I was referred to Human Tribe that I felt that my brief could be met. Having been introduced to Human Tribe via a reference that I highly respected also gave the decision extra credibility. - What was the problem you were encountering and how did it make you feel?
The core of our issue was entrenched behaviours that were not built on trust amongst the senior management team. It became clear to me that you can develop all the remuneration systems you like that rewards group results but without establishing trust the performance of the group will fall short of its potential. - Why did you choose to partner with Human Tribe?
Refer to point 2. - How did Human Tribe address your problem and how did that make you feel?
Right from the start I felt like Human Tribe wanted to help solve our issue as if it was their own and had the capability to get the job done. They outlined a clear path with measurement and accountability along the way. - What could have happened if you didn’t address this problem?
The senior management team went from trying to avoid or delay attending a bi-monthly management meetings to actively seeking to hold the meetings on a monthly basis as well as interacting outside the meetings. Keeping in mind the geographical spread of the management team across the country this is a fantastic result. The simple fact was that they now see value in attending the management meetings. The alternative would have been an underperforming toxic management environment that would have detrimentally affected the overall culture of the business. - What was the outcome of you partnering with Human Tribe?
There is a real sense of continual improvement both professionally and personally for the members of the senior management team which I’m personally very proud of and I know Human Tribe is as well. - What would you tell other organisations that are thinking about partnering with Human Tribe?
A good team will always outperform a team of good players.
